Use of Fe 500 in Sismic Zone V

Description

Dear friends,

One of my friend is of the view that TMT bars should not be used in structures being constructed in seismic Zone V because these are Fe 500 and the use of this grade is prohibited in zone V, which he claims to have read somewhere. Please guide me on this issue.

dear vijay,

first of all let we clear one thing. Fe500 or Fe550 steel is called micro alloying steel with high carbon content.Micro alloying is the process producing steel by adding alloys such as Ti ,B,C, Mn, V & Nb and its ductilty is low when compared with TMT bar.TMT bars with Fe415 characteristic strength can very be used for Seismic zone V which possess good ductility.

Sir ,The high tensile steel of Fe 500 having high ductility can be used in Zone v , in case of EQ hinge formation occurs at joints which is very good for Structure. In this case structure does not fall and time period of collapse increases.

dear sir,
kindly refer IS 1786-2008 - table 3 page 6 .u find Fe500 D with elongation percent has 16% slightly higher than Fe415 14.5 %.its also permitted as per IS13920 .hence Fe500D steel can be used.

As per IS 13920 HSD bars produced through TMT process and having elongation more than 14.5% can be used in seismic Zones 3,4,5. The earlier restriction of using HSD bars above Fe415 grade is now removed in IS 13920 through an amendment. Even Fe550D can be used in my view.
