Dear members,

Can we provide cutouts in flat slabs? up to what extent they can affect the behaviour of flat slab. Also what to do where slab to be sunk?

Dear Nikhil,

I am reproducing the reply below which was posted under different section in this E-conf.

Fully sunken slabs are not possible. Providing Flat slabs with varying moments of inertia(slightly sunken slab) can be done and has been done. Care has to be taken in modeling. The following article by Dr. Bijan Aalami, a renowned expert who developed the ADAPT software is a useful read.

As regards cut-outs, please avoid major cut outs in column strips. Following two articles throw some light on cut-outs and openings
