Hello all The note in IS 456 at the end of clause 39.7 says for unbraced columns additional moment should be added to end moments. Acc. to SP-24 (page 125 c ) the total moment for unbraced col. should be the sum of initial end moment and additional moment, even the col. is bent in double curvature (as shown in fig E-54). But the interpretation of the point (b) on the same page, is contradictory as it says for unbraced columns bent in double curvature, total moment is equal to sum of effective moment and additional moment, because total moment can only be less than initial end moment when we take effective moment as 0.6M2 -0.4M1(but it is done for braced columns). Text books also say to add additional moment to initial end moments for unbraced columns. So why SP-24 point (b) has added the words in bracket "for braced or unbraced".
