Schlaich Family

(mofified from following post of sefi by the same author
- Two Generations - of - Structural Engineers)

Mr. Jorg Sclaich  -  and  -  Mr. Mike Schlaich

You may heard about the Generations of same Professions from same family, especially it happens with Doctors. But such generation are rarely seen for Engineers. One such rare case of - Two generations of Great Structural Engineers from - Germany is the 'Schlaich' family. You may also have attended some of the Presentations by Mike Schaich in Mumbai, Banglore and Delhi on subjects like - Innovative Structures, Light Wt. Structures, Strut-and-Tie Method, Cable suspended structures etc. His papers are already published in many International Conferences (incluidng India).

Mr. Jörg Schlaich (born 1934), studied architecture and building engineering from 1953-55 at Stuttgart University before completing his studies at the Technical University of Berlin until 1959. He spent 1959-60 at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, USA. In 1963 he joined the firm Leonhardt & Andrä, the firm founded by Fritz Leonhardt. Winner of Gold Medal of ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers-London), has credit of designing many grat structures (viz. In 1993, with the roof of the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion (Stuttgart), he introduced the "speichenrad" principle to structural engineering). Generated many Accademic, Professional standards / records. Added many new concepts to SE

Mr. Mike Schlaich - (born 1960) did Civil Engineering at the University of Stuttgart (pre-diploma), 1979 - 1981, followed by Civil Engineering at the Suisse Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich, Switzerland (Dipl.-Ing. ETH) Yr. 1981 - 1985. Later worked as Assistant at the Institute of Computer Science at the ETH with Prof. Anderheggen (Dr.sc.techn. in assoc. with Prof. Thürlimann) for 4yrs. Then from 1990 till 1993 worked at Structural Engineer with FHECOR, Madrid, Spain. Since 1993 Partern with Schlaich Bergermann und. Also Lecturer at the University of Stuttgart class "Bauen mit Seilen" (building with cables).

Dear Er Vivek,

Very interesting article about Prof. Jörg and Mike Schlaich. though I have met and heard senior Prof. Jörg Schlaich, till now I have not heard Prof. Mike's lecturers.

Prof. Jörg Schlaish contributions are enormous and his work on light weight structures, Strut-and-tie models of concrete structures and  energy structures are really superb. He is one of the many great professors of our era, who deserves a prize similar to  'Nobel prize'.

Once again thanks for the info.

Regards,
Subramanian

With a heavy heart, I report the death of one of the greatest structural engineers, Prof. Jörg Schlaich, the Founder of Schlaich Bergermann & Partner, Stuttgart, on September 4th 2021, at the age of 86 in Stuttgart, Germany. He is internationally known for his revolutionary design of bridges, shells, towers and concrete buildings.

Prof. Dr. Ing. Drs. h.c. Jörg Schlaich is a German structural engineer. He studied architecture and civil engineering from 1953 to 1955 at Stuttgart University before completing his Dr.Ing. degree at the Technical University of Berlin in 1959. During 1959-60, he received his MS from the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Dr. Jörg Schlaich was made a partner of the structural engineers, Leonhardt und Andrä and was responsible for the outstanding tensile structure roof of the Olympic Stadium, Munich, built during 1968-72.

From 1974 to 2000 he served as a Full Professor and Director of the Institute for Concrete Structures (Institut für Massivbau), later called as Structural Design (Konstruktion und Entwurf) at the University of Stuttgart.

In 1980, he and his partner, Dr. Rudolf Bergermann, founded their own firm, Schlaich Bergermann und Partner in Stuttgart and Prof. Schlaich managed it until 2002. He introduced the "speichenrad" principle to structural engineering in 1993, for the roof of the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion (since 2008 Mercedes-Benz-Arena) in Stuttgart. Since then, his company has successfully employed it in stadium projects across the globe. Other structures include the observation tower at the Killesbergpark in Stuttgart.

Most of his projects as well of that of his company with offices in Stuttgart, Berlin, New York, Sao Paulo and Shanghai is documented on their website (www.sbp.de). The work of Schlaich Bergermann und partner focuses on the three main themes of building, surveying and solar energy.

Dr. Jörg Schlaich is also the developer of the Solar Updraft Tower for large scale solar energy generation. He is credited with advancing the strut and tie model for reinforced concrete. His seminal 76 page paper "Toward a Consistent Design of Structural Concrete " was published in the PCI journal, May-June 1987.

Prof. Schlaich was made a Honorary member of ACI in 1988 for his "creative engineering achievements in connection with concrete structures and contributions to the understanding the behavior of concrete". He was also an active member of IABSE.

It is  sad to know that Prof Schlaich , one of great Structural engineering Personality is no more as per posting on sefi from Dr NS Sir.

He was definitely a towering personality of this field with deep sense of aesthetic designs and a GEM of Structural engineering .

Though he is laid to  rest in resting place , but his aesthetic Structural Creations will live and speak of the  excellence of Dr Schlaich.
