Dear All,

Adequate ( qualitative and quantitative ) provision for and proper
implementation of steel reinforcement is a key to cost effective,
durable and safe structures.

The society looks upon the structural engineers to recognize the
importance and serve to help deliver adequate provision and proper
implementation.

However there are other key persons whose attitude and decisions
directly impact provisioning and implementation of steel reinforcement.
Typically these are not engineers and I believe it is up to the
structural engineers and the steel industry to inform these persons  in
language they can understand of the importance of steel reinforcement.
There should be a special emphasis on keeping them abreast with key
indicators of adequacy and  developments in best implementation practices.

These people are  :
1. The builder
2. The architect
3. The labour contractor
4. The labour
5. The government  officials who give various approvals
6. The end user
7. NGOs involved with environment and habitat planning.

Suitable documents / multimedia presentations for each would serve to
increase awareness and improve matters.

Is there any material available already?

The Tata Steel web site has a simple and educative detail of the steel
making process for the layman  (
http://www.tatasteel.com/steelmaking/default.asp ) . That is just the
sort of approach required.

I know a concerted effort from SEFI can deliver more than a basic step
in this direction.
