Dear E-Conf delegates:

I have benefited a lot with the e-conf deliberations. I would also request delegates to throw light on guidelines for repair and maintenance scheduling of concrete and RCC structures.

Most of the times, the concrete structures, especially in India / third world countries are built and then forgotten and very less yearly maintenance budgets are kept for these assets. Most of the engineers do not know how much to budget for the recurring maintenance of concrete structures (a building / a sewage treatment plant / bridge etc.).

If we can evolve a "code for maintenance scheduling and maintenance practices of concrete structures", it would not only increase the life span of the structures, but also increase the durability of the concrete poured initially for construction. State PWD departments as well as private estates / housing societies could be following these guidelines. This would go a long way to promote the disaster prevention rather than "disaster- creation" and "disaster-management".

If there are already some literature / guidelines, I would be highly obliged to get the references.

Regards,

Vinay Mehta

Dear Vijay Mehta,

Your topic is good. Proper periodical maintenance increase Durability and also life of structure.CPWD maintenance manual is very useful and available at below link:

Dear Er Vinay,

The CPWD handbook as suggested by Er Harsodaji is good.

Another good book is
Concrete Repair and Maintenance Illustrated: Problem Analysis; Repair Strategy; Techniques
, by Peter H. Emmons, RS Means, 1992, 314 pp.

I remember that some IIT (may be IITM) conducted a conf. on this topic a few years ago and the proceedings are also available- check with OXFORD & IBH PUBLISHING CO. (P) LTD

Best wishes
NS
