Er Narasinga Rao Prabhakar
I am very happy to introduce one of our own SEFIans, Er Narasinga Rao Prabhakar , as a Gem in Structural Engineering.

Education
He graduated from the University of Mysore in 1957, and then went on to pass the MIStructE (UK) exams in the first attempt (For those, who are not familiar with this exam, which is conducted by Institution of Structural Engineers,U.K.- it consists of two parts 1 & 2  Part 1  covers design concept, presentation, identification of various solution forms (including stability and loading transfer aspects), a selection of the most appropriate materials and the opportunity to provide relevant comment on a particular small (but significant) design feature. The tough Part 2  examination requires that the candidate provide relevant design calculations, general arrangement drawing and appropriate details together with comment on possible construction methods, choice of materials, specifications, estimates, management procedures, site control and safety and supervision of works in progress. The examination is seven hours in duration. Candidates must answer one question from a choice of eight.-  May be it is somewhat similar to the P.E. exam in USA but still tougher. The percentage of people passing  these exams is very low- somewhat similar to AMIE exams in India -about 20% only).

Professional Experience:
In the past 55 years of his professional service, Er Prabhakar has not only worked in prestigious companies in UK (worked there for 13 years in companies like Tileman & Co., Sir Frederick Snow and Partners, John Whittaker and Associates and Seltrust Engineering Ltd.) and India (they include Dept. of Atomic Energy, Gammon India Ltd., ECC (L&T), and M/s CR Narayana Rao), but executed numerous industrial structures like Chimneys (more than 50 ranging in height from 30 to 230 m!), cooling towers (heights up to 141 m), Power plant structures, silos, water reservoirs, Port structures, multi storey office and car park structures, and what not! The materials of his designs included steel, concrete as well as wood! For the past 20 years he is now having his own private practice at Mumbai.

Development of Computer Software:
In addition to designing various structures, Er Prabhakar has developed several useful computer software packages for analysis and design of steel and concrete elements, which are used by numerous engineering firms.

More details about the software may be found at: www.steeldesignspreadsheets.com
www.rcdesignspreadsheets.com

Technical Publications:
Er Prabhakar has authored over 25 technical papers on high-rise and industrial structures, published in national and international journals and seminars. He has served as a committee member for several Indian Codes. He has also reviewed technical papers and books for the Indian Concrete Journal.

Cartoons
Those of you who are regular readers of the Indian concrete Journal, might have noticed that in addition to contributing technical papers and discussions on important practical aspects, his cartoons are appearing regularly for the past several years. I am great fan of his cartoons (see two sample cartoons in the enclosed file). For many Engineers, like me, drawing freehand sketches itself is difficult, but Er Prabhkar is able to draw three dimensional objects easily in his cartoons, which is a special skill indeed! Moreover, many engineers lack humour, due to the rigour of their work, but Er Prabhakar brings smile on our faces, through his wit and wisdom in these cartoons Smile

Ambuja Cements have published a collection of his cartoons in a book form.

Participation in SEFI:
In the midst of his busy schedule, he is also contributing continuously in our Structural Engineering Forum (about 100 postings till now!).

I wish him all the best and may God bless him with good health & many more year years of active service to the structural engineering fraternity!

Encl: a file containing his resume and a few photos of his work.
