Dear sir,

Can any one tell me that expansion joint is required in under ground sludge tank having length of 160m by width of 9m and depth of 3.30m.

This work is for sludge drying bed, The sludge will be having some temperature.

Thanks

Dear Sir

Normally for structures below ground level expansion joints are not needed as the temperature variations will not be much. Also the friction between the wall and earth will not allow free expansion of the structure.

However in the present case the length is 160 m and width is only 9.0 m

You can plan expansion joint

Dear Sir,
In Arif Rubin's case, it is sludge tank which is ok even if you give expansion joint or not in terms of water leakage.
In case of Under ground water tank what are the specific solutions/Expansion joint treatment to arrest the water leakage through the same from out side, when expansion joint is provided.

please advice.

The client has asked me the reasons why the expansion joint is not required?
I replied them that the end condition for this tank will be in 9m direction and not the 160m direction. I have calculated the crack width for this 9m width portion and found to be 0.297mm. Also the minimum reinforcement calculation as per IS 3370-2009, Cl A-1.2, the reinforcement provided in this direction is sufficient. But for 160m direction, due to temperature variation, the change in behaviour of structure will be in direction of 9m instead of 160m.

Is the reason i provided and understood is ok or not.
Please reply. It will be too helpful.

Thanks in Advance.

Arif

Dear Sir

The temperature difference in case structures below ground level will be very less unlike structure above ground which are exposed to the temperature. A few feet below the earth the temperature variation is much less.

Hence there will be no necessity for an expansion joint
