Dear all ,

While designing a steel structure (industrial structure) , how to decide what members need to be placed in a particular location. Especially with respect to bracings. Kindly guide me in general principles of steel structure.

Dear Sir,
A common method with I usually adopt for member sizing is by load.
We know that c/s area required can be calculated by dividing load by stress.
Provide a member initially as per axial load and you can iterate it later.
If any senior member has any other method pls share.
Regards.

Dear Er. Krishnaveni,

If it is a cross bracing (i.e. diagonal bracing), the bracing is normally designed for axial tensile load only in which case the size of the member is governed by the cross-sectional area and the permissible stress.

In the case of single member bracing, the member may be subjected to axial load of compression or tension, depending on the direction of lateral load acting on the frame, which could be reversible.  The bracing member would be more critical for the compression load case for which the size of the member is governed by effective length, slenderness ratio, besides cross-sectional area.

With best wishes,
