Dear All,
Quality of services provided is many a times related with the fees being claimed/given for the structural engineering services. How can we expect that a structural engineer who is charging as low as Re 1 per sq ft as consultancy charges put in the required efforts in completing the work. Result is poor quality of work where in multi-story buildings are completed in one or two drawings within 2-3 days.
Everybody is happy. Owner/architect has to pay a very low fees, structural engineer does not have to put in much effort, contractor is happy that he can now work on his own whims and fancy. It is the common public who is unaware of all the risk involved is the ultimate sufferer.
This poor quality service which comes at a very low price has finally devalued the structural Engineers who in fact should have been one of the main players in the whole process of the construction is just sidelined……

Self regulation keeping in view to upheld the professional ethics made by Structural Engineers can solve this problem. In India the professional associations are not practising/imposing self regulation made by engineers. Whoever wants what is done.
The entire country shall remain answerable to the common public for any act that does not benefit the country/public. Responsibility of any avoidable disaster/failure of structure shall be divided among the Engineers, contractors and others involved. Then only the quality and price for the quality will rule.

Ladies and gentlemen,
Besides fees and their impact on quality of services, I would like you also to consider an interesting (and scary) phenomenon known as the Dunning–Kruger effect.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which relatively unskilled persons suffer illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their ability to be much higher than it really is.
In engineering, this can be catastrophic, with engineers not knowing that they have overstepped the bounds of their ability.
A conservative approach is needed, with engineers not hesitating to call in experts when we feel that we are approaching grey areas.
Regards,

Dear All,
It is absolutely true what Mr. Irshad Khan had mentioned in his mail. Our own engineers are the reason for devaluing the professional services rendered by the Structural Engineer for short term benefits.
In India, a common man - promoter or builder ,will always look for the low cost solutions. They are not aware of the technical competence of individuals, the valuable time the structural engineer spend for the project and its impact on the structural safety & cost. If a structural engineer comes forward to lower his fees and start giving details in an unprofessional way, it is the engineering community that is to be blamed. Our engineers are not trained to say NO. They will always say YES, due to the fear of losing the job.
The individuals has to change to bring a change in the fees structure. They should know that Structural Engineers who charge as much as Rs30/ to Rs40/ sq.ft also get the work and retain the clients.
Let us collectively improve the value of the structural engineering consultancy!!

Regulation of Engineering Profession
It is factual that there exists no statutory mandate on registration, pertinent Engineers in Bharat/India
It is also factual that every Engineer whosoever, would be responsible for related project shall be liable to prosecution should one be so involved on project designs & related prosecution
Engineer when formally involved, even with Architect legally cannot escape responsibility in any way to an extent this nation is concerned, keeping in view common conduct of Hon Judicial officers
Attached notification by IEI can be referred to as a guide which is based on one HC observations
Legally, even BE educational degree is adequate to bring to legal impact, when qualified but not enrolled/not registered engineer is involved on either various or even one activity
Empowered & authorized body for formal but voluntary registration/enrollment is IEI exclusively.
It is also, true that there is no expectation in near future that certain Engineers Act would be enforced
Also, attached IPEA members list from
