Dear All:
The Econference has been an unstinted success thanks to the very vibrant discussions and active participation of all of you. The moderators have very succinctly summarised the discussions. I cannot thank them enough- Dr N Subramanian, Prof Rupen Goswami, Er. Alok Bhowmick, Er. Nilesh Shah and Er Hemant Vadalkar have for the past two weeks kept their eyes fixed firmly on the econference and given their very timely and sagacious comments and summary at appropriate times. Sanjeev and his team has been working relentlessly through the fortnight. I have bothered him at odd times of the day and night when things were amiss with the website or mail delivery and he very patiently and promptly responded each time. Sanjeev, THANK YOU!
What a diverse set of issues we have covered in the past 2 weeks! Kudos to all of us. Heartfelt thanks from SEFI to each of you and we look forward to more such participation in future.
The operative word in the world of today is DISRUPTION. We see this all around. Airbnb has disrupted the hotel business, ola and uber cabs have dislodged the black and yellow cabs, amazon and flipkart have greatly affected retail business. Why should we expect our profession be immune from disruption? And how will we face it?
Ten years ago, we could not have predicted the world as it is today.Likewise we are unable to foresee our industry a decade later. From the econf, it appears we want a sea change in the Education of Civil engineering, in the Regulation of the Profession; we seek a better ecosystem where we are compensated adequately and where we in turn conduct ourselves with ethics of the highest order. It will be interesting in ten years time to go back to the archives of this Econf and review what we have achieved from our wishlist and what is no longer relevant.
During the Econference an interesting milestone was achieved. We crossed the 20,000 membership number and are now 20,055 a community of Sefians. This is arguably the largest structural engineering community in the world. From the enthusiastic response to the Econference, we are motivated to have one more in 2016. The topic can be decided at a later date.
As you are aware, SEFI has become a huge platform. We had a live streaming of discussions for all members and this called for a server upgrade and augmentation of capacity. It also needed 24x7 maintenance from Sanjeev's team. And even then, at times the site crashed. We request all of you to contribute in helping SEFI continue to be a major resource centre for structural engineers as well as enable it to hold more such Econferences and other activities. So, pl do contribute. Kindly check the homepage for information on how to contribute.
The next big thing on SEFI is new logo selection. The competition is ongoing and I urge you all to participate (along with your graphic designer friend) if you have not done already. The last date for entries is Feb 27. We will put up shortlisted entries for voting thereafter.
Warm regards,
Alpa Sheth
SEFI Coordinator & Trustee
