Dear Engineer,

How to calculate the road turning radius as per the Indian standards based on the width of the road .

Kindly give the Indian standard reference to calculate the turning radius.

I think, the minimum turning radius depends on the design speed and maximum super elevation of the road. Code IRC : 86 may give guidance.

Hi Jayakumar sir,

What you said is correct I have gone through the table given in the IRC but it is independent of width . As per the table 10, IRC 86 -1983 for super elevation 7% the minimum horizontal curve radius is 30 m it is independent of width. If the width of the road is 3 or 4 m providing 30m as a curve radius for internal roads will be uneconomical. Give the suggestion, how to  take the curve radius for internal roads for 3,4 m wide roads as per the standards.

Turning radius is given by R = V2/127(e+f), in 10.3 of the Code. This indicates that the design speed V has the maximum influence on R. If we keep V to the lowest possible, you can accordingly reduce R.

Theoretically, the turning radius has nothing to do with the width of the road. Broader and narrower roads will need the same radius, for given values of design speed and super elevation.
Practically, narrower roads will reduce the speed of the vehicles plying through it and hence smaller radius will suffice.

Take a maximum value of super elevation of 1 in 15 and proceed.
      In congested & narrow roads and city roads, the vehicle need not and will not move at the design speed. Hence at bends in such roads, we need not emphasize much on super elevation and turning radius, as vehicles will be negotiating the bend in slow speed.

Dear Jayakumar sir,

Can I know standard (ref) for maximum superelevation value. As per IRC 86 7% & 10% based on snow bounding.
