I am designing a g+3 storied residential building in which a column needs to start from outer beam on 3rd floor and goes upto mumty level as per architectural drawing. How do i design that column?

Dear Er. Aaamir,
Floating columns are never advisable in a framed structure, in seismic point of view. How come the Architect has suggested it ? The structural engineer can do away with it while planning the structural system. See : http://www.iitk.ac.in/nicee/EQTips/EQTip26.pdf
Floating columns are more harmful if provided in lower floors. If it is absolutely necessary, then you have to design a proper transfer girder.
If it is required for architectural requirement, you can provide a dummy brick pillar also.

Dear sefian,
As a structural engineer, we should advise against the provision of floating columns in a structure. Architects may not aware of its implications, as the floating columns are more vulnerable to seismic forces. Convince your architect for an alternate solution.

Dears
Here I’m not denying fact that building with floating columns will be underperforming compared to the structurally regular building but why do you compare when the regular structural system is not of your interest in this case, you deal those shortcomings in structural engineering terms. There are many such designs worldwide from small buildings to gigantic landmarks.
please do not get the impression that No matter what we should avoid those structural configurations, if so below buildings would be not a reality and Architecture or real estate industry never be cherished if a structural engineer thinks so.
It is absolutely possible to design building with STRUCTURAL irregularities as long as load-path is ensured and structurally justified for all loading combinations
It only requires some additional efforts in terms of calculations, detailing and QA in construction. For small building projects, it is very difficult to invest such computational efforts hence engineers sometimes try to avoid, as we don’t get paid for it, unfortunately.
Keep trying it.

Lets keep the IS code on one side as it is very unrealistic and conservative, especially the new 1893 code. I have discussed certain provisions like banning floating columns, restriction on flat plates with structural engineers in Europe and the US and they all have shown discomfort with such a restriction.
Anyways back to the problem in hand, yes you can provide floating columns only for mumty type situations but just be sure to brace it to the nearby columns (which erect from a foundation..not a floating column again) in both directions. You can hide your brace inside the brick walls.
Its a suggestion. Talk to your manager about this. Dont lose your job over a SEFI blog!!

Please note that as per latest IS1893 (P1) floating column is not allowed for any sort of building, specially located in zone 3 to zone 5.Regards,
