Dear Sefians,

This has reference to the book "Design of Steel structures", by Dr.N.Subramanian (Oxford University Press)

In the chapter "welded connections", worked Examples, 6.19 and 6.26,
1) Direct stress = Shear Force (kN)/Area of unit throat weld (mm2)
2) Bending stress = Moment (kN-mm)/ Z of extreme weld fibre (mm3)

However, units of both Direct stress and Bending stress have been indicated as kN/m. Whereas, according to their expression both Direct and bending stress will have units of kN/mm2.

What is the philosophy/method involved in the conversion of kN/mm2 to kN/mm?

Kindly advise.

Thanks and Regards,
Pradeep Hebbar

I already sent reply to your private email sent by you. In both examples, a unit weld is considered and also stated in the example.
As I am not well I could not reply earlier
