My consultant has provided two layer reinforcement (Y8 @ 6” c/c for short span & Y8 @ 7” c/c for long span) for toilet sunken slab. My sunken dimension is 9.75 feet X 10 feet. I have seen providing two-way slabs for toilet sunken. Is it really necessary to provide two layer of reinforcement for toilet sunken ? If yes, Can you explain the reason behind it.

Theoretically there is no need but due to continuity at support top reinforcement needs to be provided to cater the negative bending moment. After providing lap length beyond point of contraflexure hardly small amount of steel can be saved. For construction point of view it is usually provided through out the span. Thanks and regards,
