Dear Friends,

Kindly confirm the minimum reinforcement in pile whether its 0.4% as per IS code or 1.25%  as per books

I have attached the snaps from book BC PUNMIA/RAMAMURTAM they all said same philosophy that 1.25% upto 30D and then increases as per length of pile.

I didnt found these clauses in code which are written in the books but all authors are saying same philosophy it means they are following the same referance.

What is your opinion  ?

Dear Patil

Minimum % shall be 0.4% as per IS:2911 (Part-1/Sec-2)-1979. Since we follow the codes, you can proceed with the above clause.

Dear Patil

The percentage of steel for Cast in-situ piles min 0.4% of C/s area of pile. Since the reinforcement is not accounted in load calculation of cast in-situ piles. only the unreinforced concrete strength is taken in structural capacity of the pile. For Precast piles the percentage of steel is based on L/D ratio (i.e 1.25%) for withstand the handling stress, driving stress.

Dear Mr Patil
If the pile is bored cast in situ, then the minimum reinforcement required is 0.4 percent of gross cross sectional area as per IS -2911.
If the pile is pre cast, then the reinforcement should be as per IS-2911 part 1 section 3.It depends upon l/D ratio and varies from minimum 1.25 percent to 1.5 percent of cross sectional area. The same is mentioned in BC Punmia Sir book which you have provided as attachment. It is required for lifting and handling stress.
Regards
