Dear Sefians,

Sectional properties of Z purlins can be calculated using my Excel Worksheet 'Sectional properties of any shape' which is a part of STeelDesign software (priced) developed by me.

I am attaching herewith 3 files of the above worksheet showing the inputs and outputs for sectional properties of the same Z section considered by Er Arunkumar in his design for Z purlins.  The results of sectional properties in both these tally well.

With best wishes,

N. Prabhakar

Sir,

From the cursory look at the images, I could not find any reference in the spreadsheet to local, distortional, flexural-torsional buckling and effect of partial sheeting restraint as is required by AISI S100 and incorporated in the CUFSM software by Dr. Schafer.

Dear Er. Rudra Nevatia,

My previous posting with the images related to calculation of sectional properties only of Z -shaped section, and not on the design aspect of purlin or sheeting rail where this section is commonly used.

In the design of purlins and sheeting rails, it is a common practice to have strong cleats at supports which would provide adequate torsional restraint. Besides. claddings and fixings are to be checked for adequacy to provide lateral
restraint to the purlins and are to be capable of carrying the component of load in the plane of the roof slope.

With best wishes,

It will be in the best interest of cold-formed steel designers to go through AISI S100, a voluminous 500+ page code with commetary; the latest edition is freely downloadable.

This code now encourages use of Direct Strength Method (DSM) which is based on finite strip analysis. CUFSM is a free software for DSM.

Just Google.
