Dear Charulatha and all the fresh graduates !All the youngster/fresh engineering graduates should understand that getting the degree they are having only 25% knowledge on that field they studied. The society expects at least 50%, though not 100% because we engineers will never get 100% knowledge because technology is developing day by day. So we have to learn continuously up to our death, in other words, Love your technology, Live on your technology, finally we have to die on our technology. Now let us come to the point. How to start our career when we have only 25% knowledge. That is why every body needs experienced people. You may say that no body gives job. That is scenario for structural Engineers. Every Architect office the have their own Engineers. Demand for the field Engineers are always more. How ? One structural Engineer can design for 12 medium and lower level projects. For the projects 72 field engineers are needed. (12 projects X 3 engineers ie lower, middle and top level engineers X 2 years per project). So for the structural design engineers this the way to proceed. When you studied you paid to the college and earned that 25% knowledge. Now what you must do to get that 25% in another 2 years or so, pay to the experienced design offices and learn how to do the design etc. right from the base to take loads, because in colleges they give bending moment values for design, or, of course they teach the analysis part also separately without coordinating all the aspects right from discussing withe clients/Architects, their need, soil report, cost analysis for the selection of structural elements, etc. Above all we must understand that academic need is something and the industrial need is something. Why we appreciate the Harvard and other Universities, because there, the Professors are Professionals and the Professionals are the Professors. ie All the Professors are allowed to go and get experience outside or they recruit the field experienced people for the post of Professors. There are two obvious advantages. One, they can prepare the students on par with the industrial need and secondly they can bring consultancy to the Universities and involve the students to prepare them in such a way to do the consultancy when they finish the study and go out from the Campus.

Now a days, lot of private senior engineers have started training centers in their own consultancy offices or some renowned professional bodies like ACCE etc have started training to prepare you become good at your starting career. Private companies in your area is better to learn for a long time and to start your won business after some time , after gaining other art and science Technics of that office. In Tamil Nadu we Senior Professionals ( Col. Dr. Nallathambi, Prof. Dr Sundararajulu etc.) have already started teaching and equipping them in their structural consultancy offices to stand on your own legs in the civil engineering industry. I wish throughout India all the Senior Professional Engineers should start and guide the juniors to stand on their own legs. That is the greatest advantage in Engineering degree. In engineering academic colleges they put strong foundation to know the technical knowledge. It is up to you to come up with your attitude to go the the desired Altitude, because there is much unemployment problem in the society due to more incoming engineers. So we must think in a different way. Remember, most of the Architects , Doctors, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants start and do their own business without having their certificates and begging for the jobs from others. Doing work with the seniors for sometime without pay or giving nominal pay to the seniors for the training you have for some months or years for the good training that you are going to have. Do not get fear to get the clients. Initially who knows that you are an engineer available for them. So get your nearby known people and do your services. If you are able to satisfy one customer that customer is going to be your marketing manager without your search. Multiply. There are lot and lot of clients you can get in the world, especially if you are able to make an awareness in the society about the importance of you the structural engineers. Otherwise to whom do you to expect to get the clients or the job for you. Really, really there are thousands of clients need your help. But initially only 2 or 4 customers regularly is enough. Remember ! there are thousands of beautiful girls in the world. I cannot marry all of them. It is impossible also . For our survival one wife ie few clients are enough for our business, not all the thousands of clients. Let others live other clients. So let us do our profession without any competition or greediness.
So Arise ! Awake ! to stand on your own legs. As a retired Professor of Civil Engineering I use to tell students and all the young graduates to stand on their own legs to provide employment to others without aiming to work under somebody.. Experience? Oh nobody is giving chance in the name of unemployment. Now, of course, with the above courageous idea you can get it in one year of your professional training knowledge. Somebody cannot get even after working of 10 years. So that speedy quality you must create. The world is needed only hard working and especially smart people. All the best juniors !

Dear Sundarajalu sir

Such a thoughtful insight sir.
You wonderfully said the problems faced by a structural engineer. Even a well educated person is lacking in the knowledge about a role of a structural engineer.
But even a civil engineer who knows about the importance of structural designing are only using some thumb role in regards to the design of a structure. They also should create the awareness among clientele and general public in regards to the importance of a structural engineer while starting the construction of a building.
You wrote about the classes for providing additional 25% of knowledge .So please mention the details and contact to enquire about the course.
It will be very helpful to us.

And also please mention about the opportunities available for a structural engineer.

What are the professional bodies a structural Engineer should have membership and how it will be helpful to him?
