Can you please help me in understanding the difference between Shear Hinge and Flexural Plastic Hinge (Theoretically, Mathematically and Practically).

PlasticHinge is classified basically in Two forms...
1.Moment or Flexural Plastic Hinge
2.Shear Hinge
Sowhere the structural failure pattern is flexure type, there youshould use moment plastic hinge.
Inthat same way where the failure may occur for shear, you should useshear plastic hinge. |

Decision to insert which type of hinges in beams is not depended on the structural failure pattern but on the moment and shear capacities of the section. And that depends not only on the section dimensions, but also on the reinforcement provided after analysis and design .
Usually both flexural hinges as well as shear hinges are provided at the ends of the beams. The latter is omitted only when the possibility of a premature shear failure is ignored.

Dear Sir,
Hinges are coming into picture if we are doing a nonlinear analysis. They are basically the mathematical relations that we have to define in such a way that if the member forces or displacement exceeds the yield limits or elastic limits, there should be change is stiffness or it should enter into plastic region.
First we can divide hinges into force controlled hinges and displacement control hinges as per their definitions in software. It is basically, if the yield point reaches, the force controlled hinges will fail and section losses in force carrying capacity or it is basically for brittle failure cases. In case of displacement controlled hinges, the section load carrying capacity will changes ones it reached the yield point.
If you consider a beam, the governing forces are bending moment and shear force. So the inelastic stage can be defined by moment hinges and shear hinges.
1.Moment Hinges
These are basically the moment vs curvature or moment vs rotation relationship. These as calculated bases on the cross section properties and stress strain relationships.
2. Shear hinges
These can be defined as force vs displacement or stress vs strain relationship. The calculations are based on the basic principles same as in moment hinges.
More complicated P-M-M hinges will come into picture for columns as it is governed by combined action of axial load and bi-axial moments.
