Dear All Sefians,
Practicing bridge and structural engineers using various structural engineering codes have been feeling the need for a commentary, explanatory guidelines, illustrative examples and other compilations so that they can understand the code better and comply with the requirements of the code with confidence.
The Governing Council of the Indian Association of Structural Engineers (IAStructE) have undertaken the task of preparing an explanatory commentary including illustrative worked examples for the IRC code on ‘Loads and Load Combinations’ (i,e. IRC:6-2017).
We have now developed draft of the above document and it is now available at link http://iastructe.co.in/volumes , which can be downloaded.
We invite all the interested professionals and academics to attend seminar-cum-workshop, scheduled on 23rd November 2019 from 09.30 AM onwards at PHD House, New Delhi to discuss/review this document and share inputs/provide feedback and suggestions on it.
Kindly note, the registration is free for all IAStructE members and practicing structural engineers who are keen to actively participate in this event. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
In view of limited seats (maximum 90 seats) available at the course venue, all interested colleagues / academicians / practicing structural engineers should register through the above link (http://iastructe.co.in/volumes) to CONFIRM their participation for the workshop, latest by 20th November 2019, by 2:00 PM. Please note that the registration shall be done on first come first serve basis. Detailed program will be sent to registered participants only.
Best Regards,
Alok Bhowmick, FNAE
President IAStructE

Dear Colleagues,
I have an observation on the 'Water Current Force', cl. 210.4.
In case of water striking the pier at an angle, the Code says, the 'VELOCITY' is to be resolved in V Sin f and V Cos f, where f is the angle.
I feel it should be the ‘FORCE’ (or V2) that should be resolved in F Sin f and F Cos f.
In case of a circular pier, where the ‘K’ factor is 0.66 in both transverse and longitudinal directions, the resultant (vector addition) of F Sin f and F Cos f gives F, which is correct.
Resultant of F Sin2 f and F Cos2 f (page 45 of 90 of Vol II) is not F.
Please give your valuable comments on this.
Best Regards,
Deepak Kulkarni

Dear Er Deepak Kulkarni,
'Water current' in a river is a velocity driven force. Velocity is a vector quantity with magnitude as well as direction. The code IRC:6 defines velocity distribution and NOT the force distribution along the depth. Force is derived quantity. If you see clause 210.5 of the code, it talks about 'possible variation in the direction of current'. Hence it is the velocity which is resolve and NOT the force.
Best Wishes
