This is sad news. I knew him well for a long time since my student days. Once, sometime in the seventies, I stayed in his house during an EE conference at Roorkee. Unwavering in his views on seismicity, strong motion & general earthquake engineering  he was  a domain expert of multidimensions. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.R.N.Iyengar

This is, indeed, unfortunate news. Like many of us, I knew of Professor Chandrasekaran through his books and papers while learning the ABC of earthquake engineering. Over SEFI, and subsequently, over private emails and phones, I got fantastic opportunities to know him personally and more deeply. I have learnt a lot through discussing, agreeing and disagreeing with him over many many issues. He regarded me as his friend, but to me, he will always be my teacher.

My initial perception of him was that of a grumpy old professor, who prefers to express vehemence while articulating his view as a matter of habit. But, the more I learnt him, the more I realise that it was, in fact, my frivolousness - the real ARC was a super-kind, highly accommodating and very gentle human being. On one occasion, while exchanging strong views and countering his articulated technical confrontation, I ended up saying to him that 'I don't think your this view will be compliant with the modern-day practice'. Immediately I realised I might have crossed a boundary here. But, he, with laughter, said 'probably, that is the reason why retirement is so needed'. Uhhh... and I relaxed my raised lungs!

Professor Chandrasekaran provided very constructive and brutally authentic insider's view to me on my dilemma of shifting my career's centroid from professional practice to academia and community engagement. His reassurance and positive suggestions were amongst my dependable pillars based on which I decided to make a significant shift in my career a couple of years back. His replies to my emails became sporadic lately. I wish I could have contacted him earlier to ask on his wellbeing, and have adequately said 'thank you'. One more of his advice for me is to write books, and I reassure his eternal being that I am sincerely working on it.

With his passing, I have lost a valuable critic, with whom I used to calibrate my understanding and reflection on my learning. I will be profoundly missing you, Professor.

A prayer, a flower and a candle this evening to celebrate you, my dear teacher - and to say thank you for your help. May you reach Nirvan and be with eternal peace.

My sincere sympathy goes out to his immediate family, friends and students.

With sadness and sorrow,
Kunal
