Dear sir,

As per my understanding, the concept of steel beams encased in concrete is generally applied only from durability and fire point of view.
Contribution of the composite action to flexural strength is not generally taken into account owing to our inability to ensure the proper bond between concrete and steel components against inter facial shear.
However, the resistance of the beam against shear can be taken as the sum of the resistances offered by the steel and concrete components with suitable factors of safety (LRFD/LSM/ASD).
This is based on my understanding of the codes. None of the mainstream Textbooks written on composite construction talk about encased beams sections.
During my course on Steel-Concrete composites, the following textbooks were recommended -
1. Analysis and Design of Steel and Composite Structures by Qing Quan Liang
2 Composite Structures of Steel and Concrete (Part 1) by R.P. Johnson.
Both are based on the Limit State philosophy i.e. the Eurocodes.
None of the Indian codes talk about encased steel beams.

Regards,
Akshay Mallan
