Dear Sefians,
I need some light on whether a structural engineer is qualified to issue a soil investigation report.
If not, what is the necessary and sufficient qualification for a civil engineer to put his signature on a soil investigation report.
Thanks & Regards,

Dear, You can't sign for Soil Test Report. Only GEOTECH ENGINEERS are eligible to sign the soil test reports. Tarun Kumar Ramdas.

Everey qualified civil engineer is competent to do works on soil investigation & interpret reports accordingly & also, to issue investigation reflection publically & also, project wise
It depends on civil engineer's confidence & its knowledge in depth to soil stratigraphy
Soil investigation is of course, too complicated & detailed knowing subject & certainly, varies in its nature
It is your confidence & experience that can make one competent & not legal competency |

Dear Er.Tijo,
As advised by Suraj sir, a thorough theoretical & practical knowledge in what you learn in your under-graduate level Geotechnical Engineering entitles you to recommend the aspects in a soil investigation report, unless there is any complication in the soil stratigraphy.
Best wishes,

Dear Er Jayakumar
According to me, what we learn in B.Tech. is only introduction to Civil Engineering. Hence we can't call ourselves as Consultants in any brach of Civil Engineering unless we have enough experience and expertise or have a Masters degree in a particular field.
While having experience we should be curious to know new things.
Warm regards
Subramanian

Dear NS sir,
Your opinion is sensible.
I have seen many soil reports issued by structural engineers !

Dear sir, I agree to your point. Any BE civil or above can give soil investigation report. There should be one addition of experience of soil investigation field. |

Dear Sefians,
Soil Investigation Report making is a part of Soil Mechanics, a specialised branch of civil engineering, like structural engineering. Any BTech, Mtech or even a PhD cannot do soil investigation unless he/she has the knowledge of soil mechanics and a good expertise in doing a soil investigation report.
Soil Investigation involves rigorous procedure like taking samples of soil from shallow excavation/deep excavation/bore holes depending on the soil profile at site. It requires special plant and equipment to do deep bore holes. Ground water table is also determined if it is there. The soil samples are tested in a laboratory for physical, chemical, elastic and moisture content properties. The report recommends the safe bearing capacity of soil at a certain depth below natural ground level, for isolated footings/strip footings/raft foundation. For deep foundation like piles, report recommends pile depth and capacity of piles. It also recommends right type of cement in aggressive type of soil. During execution of foundation work, engineers involved with the report also visit the site.
I don't think all civil/strucural engineers can do the above task professionally unless they have the knowledge of soil mechanics and have a good experience in soil invsigation reporting.
I trust you will find the above informaton useful.
With best wishes,
N. Prabhakar
