Dear Sefi friend ,

IF ON THE COLUMN WITH BOTTOM SUPPORT ROLLER , TOP CAN NOT BE ON  THE ROLLER OR SYSTEM IS UNSTABLE .  IS THIS FRAME IS THE ONLY FRAME ?  YOU NEED SOME OTHER FRAME TO MAKE THE SYSTEM STABLE .  LATERAL STIFFENESS OF THE SYSTEM IS IN QUESTION ? .  STAAD WILL NOT RUN AND WILL GIVE AN ERROR MESSAGE  SAYING YOUR SYSTEM IS UBSTABLE .

Regards.

Substituted Frame Method of analysis is an approximate method. When one has access to software, why should one go for any approximate method ?

Dear Srinivasan Sir,

What exactly is your question? Why and what is the condition, in reality, to consider top portion of the column as fixed but and release Fy?

Is he trying to avoid axial load or effect due to lateral displacement on the column? is your column an architectural element or too slender?

your question looks interesting, but if you share your problem along with drawing others can visualise the problem easily and help you in a better way.

Thanks,
