I am in the process designing a self supporting steel pipe bridge which carries water at atmospheric pressure. The span of the bridge is 20 metres & diameter is 2.6 m. As we know ,The pipe will be subjected to longitudinal tensile stresses at bottom & compressive stress at top. The local buckling has to be prevented. What is the limiting b/t ratio for such pipes? IS 800 for semi compact sections gives b/t of 146 which gives a thickness of 17 mm I tried with IS 6533 - section 2 - 1989 steel chimney code. This code specifies the minimum thickness based on diameter D/500 only . Also, it gives a table of allowable stresses to prevent bucking. Can we use this table for design of pipes as both the chimneys & pipes are subjected to predominant bending moments. M.durai |

Eurocode specifies a b/t of 50/70/90 times √235/fy for class 1/2/3 CHS sections- this seems like a more conservative starting point. |

Dear Er,
The pipe will be carried on saddles in a truss structure, so that the span of the pipe will be of the order of 3m or so. |
