Someone asked me this question:
I would be grateful to you help me regarding different diameter of piles in any project.
Can we use different diameter of piles in a project?

My answer:
Yes, you can.
I also contacted Prof. H.J. Shah on this. His reply is: Even for the foundation of one shear wall with large moments, a group of piles consisting of larger diameters on the periphery and smaller diameters internally may be used.

As per length is concerned, you can use different lengths also in one project. This is being followed worldwide.

Dear Dr N S Sir,

Of course, different pile diameters can be used in the project, or even for the same shear wall. However, this may introduce some practical difficulties on site - changing the tools repeatedly for boring different pile diameters slows down the work.

Also, it is very important to have a significant difference between the pile diameters being combined, so as to avoid confusion at site. For example, don't combine 1200 and 1000 diameter piles, since they can be confused visually.

Regards,

ASO
