|
|
Hello All,
Greetings.
I am looking for the details of the design firms who have designed the tallest steel flagpoles ( including the concrete spread/pile foundation) in India. See the link below.
https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/karnataka/2022/aug/09/karnatakas-hosapete-will-now-have-indias-tallest-flagpole-2485600.html
Is there any international code available for the design of Tall flag poles say more than 400 feet tall?
The tallest pole in the world is in Cairo Egypt. See link below.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_flagpoles_by_height
I know of one USA code, which is NAAMM FP 1001-07 Guided specifications for Design of Metal Flagpoles. This is basically follows ASD method and 3 sec gust wind speed. ASCE705 is referred in this code for wind loads.
I am looking for guidance for the design of base, anchoring details, Allowable deflection, Fatigue design, protective coating, proposed design life, available codes other than from NAAMM, as above.
Is there any codes available for onshore wind turbine supporting steel pole structure? (Not the turbine design). Also allowable deflection for the pole structure which is supporting the wind turbines constructed in onshore?
Can we use these wind turbine supporting cantilever tapering type structures as a guidance for tall flagpoles?
I referred to the following links online, but no details are available for deflection calculations and the base design, vortex design, fatigue design etc.

file:///C:/Users/VS%20Rajashekar/Downloads/Design%20&%20Construction%20of%20Flag%20Posts%20(5).pdf
If any one who has designed the flagpole of the order of 400feet and above, please contact me and help me with your valuable feed back.
Thanks so much.

Raja Shekar

Dear Sir,
IS has recently published IS 17740:2022 for Mast & Poles, and Also you can refer various standards mentioned in the IS 17740's preference for more details.
additionally you can refer book Cable Structures by Max Irvin, Which I found good one.

Hi all,
One more article by Dr.N.Subramanian showing the tall flagpole design.
But specific information I am looking for is not available in this article.
Regards,
Raja Shekar.

Dear bhsolanki,
I read the document IS 17740 : 2022. Not much of a information regarding unguyed monopoles are available. May be we can use this code for the poles with heights say 50 feet to 150 feet.
I do not know what is the maximum height of mono cantilever tapering circular lightpoles constructed in india.
However the code allows a deflection of 1.5% of the height of the pole for serviceability for cantilever mpno poles.
This means that for 400 feet the allowable deflection would be of the order of 6 feet with out flag. (The wind speed would be of the order of say 30 m/sec). For 50 year MRI 3sec gust wind say with 55 m/sec or more velocity, the calculated deflection would be around the order of 10 to 13 feet.
(With say 10 feet and 3 feet as base and top diameters of the flagpole).
Cen we afford to allow that much deflection?
See the link for a video which shows the condition of the flagpole with out flag with extreme wind condition.
https://youtu.be/0mBJtqg9LfA?si=HhTNbLjqtzkkpgtm
I think the flag has flown off and the pole fell down.
Regards,
Raja Shekar.

Hi all,
Even under the service wind loads, the flagpole is wobbling.
This may be due to vortex shedding effect of wind on flagpoles.
See one more angle of the flag pole wobbling.

Dear Er. Raja Shekar,
Last year, we had got an Inquiry for a tallest Flag pole in Imphal, Mizoram from one of the NGO in Kolkata. We had given our Techno-commercial offer for this job. But at last moment the client wanted consultant should do it free of cost... hence we had to drop out! There was no geotech data available neither wind data etc. IIT-Delhi was providing consultation on the Fabric designs.
I understand that recently PWD / local govt. has approved that proposal and detail design / construction is likely to begin soon.
I can share to you the copy of our technical proposal (without any financial data or agency names etc.) in person if you are keen to explore for purely academic purpose.
