SUB:   Load Combination of 1.5 (DL+EL) in clause 6.3 and Computation
of Characteristic Value of Earthquake Force, as per clause 7.3 and 7.4
of  IS:1893-2002.

The characteristic value of Earthquake Force is to be computed with
“Seismic Weight” present on each floor, which according to clause
7.3, 7.4 and by definition 3.29, consists of full Dead Load (i.e
characteristic Dead Load) plus an appropriate amount of specified
Imposed Load assumed as a percentage of the characteristic value of
Imposed Loads given in IS:875 for the particular occupancy of the
building. This percentage of Imposed Load (25% or 50% as per table 8
of IS:1893-2002) is assumed such that it reasonably covers the weight
associated with furniture, artifacts, stored materials, machinery and
such components of the Imposed Load which are of a semi permanent
nature and the weight of occupants, which in all probability is likely
to exist in a building during an Earthquake. In majority of cases,
this semi-permanent component of Imposed Load will be substantially
higher than the weight of occupants during normal times.

UBC  1997 also specifies that seismic dead load,W,is total dead loads
plus  25% of  LL  etc.

So the % of Live Load Specified in IS:1893-2002 must be considered
along with Dead loads in seismic weight for the computation of
Earthquake Load in the load combination 15(DL +EL).

Dear Prof. K.K. Nayar and S.C. Mehrotra,

Can you please guide me to the clause # and the page # in the UBC 1997 where
it is stated that "seismic dead load,W,is total dead loads plus  25% of  LL
etc."

I would be obliged for the information, and please respond to the forum, so
others can also have the information.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Pankaj Gupta
