STRENGTH AND DURABILITY PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE CONTAINING QUARRY ROCK DUST AS FINE AGGREGATE

ABSTRACT

Common river sand is expensive due to excessive cost of transportation from natural sources. Also large-scale depletion of these sources creates environmental problems. As environmental transportation and other constraints make the availability and use of river sand less attractive, a substitute or replacement product for concrete industry needs to be found. River sand is most commonly used fine aggregate in the production of concrete poses the problem of acute shortage in many areas. Whose continued use has started posing serious problems with respect to its availability, cost and environmental impact.

In such a situation the Quarry rock dust can be an economic alternative to the river sand. Quarry Rock Dust can be defined as residue, tailing or other non-voluble waste material after the extraction and processing of rocks to form fine particles less than 4.75mm. Usually, Quarry Rock Dust is used in large scale in the highways as a surface finishing material and also used for manufacturing of hollow blocks and lightweight concrete prefabricated Elements. Use of Quarry rock dust as a fine aggregate in concrete draws serious attention of researchers and investigators.

This paper presents the feasibility of the usage of Quarry Rock Dust as hundred percent substitutes for Natural Sand in concrete. Mix design has been developed for three grades using design an approach IS, ACI, USBR, RN.No.4 and BRITISH for both conventional concrete and quarry dust concrete. Tests were conducted on cubes and beams to study the strength of concrete made of Quarry Rock Dust and the results were compared with the Natural Sand Concrete. An attempt has also been made to durability studies on Quarry Rock Dust when compared with the Natural Sand concrete. It is found that the compressive, flexural strength and Durability Studies of concrete made of Quarry Rock Dust are nearly 10% more than the conventional concrete.


CONCLUSIONS

Based on the above discussions, following conclusions are drawn:

The Physical and chemical properties of quarry rock dust is satisfied the requirements of [3]code provision in properties studies (Tables 1 and 2). Natural river sand, if replaced by hundred percent Quarry Rock Dust from quarries, may some times give equal or better than the reference concrete made with Natural Sand, in terms of compressive and flexural strength studies (Tables 3 and 4).

Studies reported here and elsewhere have shown that the strength of Quarry Rock Dust concrete is comparatively 10-12 percent more than that of similar mix of Conventional Concrete [1,2 and 11 to 19]. Also the result of this investigation shows that drying shrinkage strains of Quarry Rock Dust concrete are quite large to the shrinkage strain of Conventional Concrete. However, at the later age, they have shown equal strain than Conventional Concrete (Figure-1). The Durability of Quarry Rock Dust concrete under sulphate and acid action is higher inferior to the Conventional Concrete (Figures 2 and 3). Permeability Test results (Figure-5) clearly demonstrates that the permeability of Quarry Rock Dust concrete is less compared to that of conventional concrete. The water absorption of Quarry Rock Dust concrete is slightly higher than Conventional Concrete (Figure-6). Therefore, the results of this study provide
a strong support for the use of Quarry Rock Dust as fine aggregate in Concrete Manufacturing.
�� Thus, it can be concluded that the replacement of natural sand with Quarry Rock Dust, as full replacement in concrete is possible. However, it is advisable to carry out trial casting with Quarry Rock Dust proposed to be used, in order to arrive at the water content and mix proportion to suit the required workability levels and strength requirement. However, more research studies are being made on Quarry Rock Dust concrete necessary for the practical application of Quarry Rock Dust as Fine Aggregate.

PROPERTIES OF GREEN CONCRETE CONTAINING QUARRY ROCK DUST AND MARBLE SLUDGE POWDER AS FINE AGGREGATE

ABSTRACT
Green concrete capable for sustainable development is characterized by application of industrial wastes to reduce consumption of natural resources and energy and pollution of the environment. Marble sludge powder can be used as filler and helps to reduce the total voids content in concrete. Natural sand in many parts of the country is not graded properly and has excessive silt on other hand quarry rock dust does not contain silt or organic impurities and can be produced to meet desired gradation and fineness as per requirement. Consequently, this contributes to improve the strength of concrete. Through reaction with the concrete admixture, Marble sludge powder and quarry rock dust improved pozzolanic reaction, micro-aggregate filling, and concrete durability. This paper presents the feasibility of the usage of quarry rock dust and marble sludge powder as hundred percent substitutes for natural sand in concrete. An attempt has been made to durability studies on green concrete compared with the natural sand concrete. It is found that the compressive, split tensile strength and durability studies of concrete made of quarry rock dust are nearly 14 % more than the conventional concrete. The concrete resistance to sulphate attack was enhanced greatly. Application of green concrete is an effective way to reduce environment pollution and improve durability of concrete under severe conditions.

CONCLUSIONS
All the experimental data shows that the addition of the industrial wastes improves the physical and mechanical properties. These results are of great importance because this kind of innovative concrete requires large amounts of fine particles. Due to its high fineness of the marble sludge powder it provided to be very effective in assuring very good cohesiveness of concrete. From the above study, it is concluded that the quarry rock dust and marble sludge powder may be used as a replacement material for fine aggregate.
�� The chemical compositions of quarry rock dust and marble sludge powder such as Fe2O3, MnO, Na2O, MgO, K2O, Al2O3, CaO, and SiO2 are comparable with that of cement.
�� The replacement of fine aggregate with 50% marble sludge powder and 50% Quarry rock dust (Green concrete) gives an excellent result in strength aspect and quality aspect. The results showed that the M4 mix induced higher compressive strength, higher splitting tensile strength. Increase the marble sludge powder content by more than 50% improves the workability but affects the compressive and split tensile strength of concrete.
�� Green concrete induced higher workability and it satisfy the self compacting concrete performance which is the slump flow is 657mm without affecting 88
the strength of concrete. Slump flow increases with the increase of marble sludge powder content. V-funnel time decreases with the increase of marble sludge powder content
�� Test results show that these industrial wastes are capable of improving hardened concrete performance.
�� Green concrete enhancing fresh concrete behavior and can be used in architectural concrete mixtures containing white cement.
�� Permeability test results clearly demonstrate that the permeability of green concrete is less compared to that of conventional concrete.
�� The water absorption of green concrete is slightly higher than conventional concrete.
�� The durability of green concrete under sulphate is higher to that of conventional concrete. From the results after 90-day immersion, the mortar specimens with green concrete in 7.5% sulphate solution have similar effect with those immersed for 28 days, but for those in 7.5% magnesium sulphate, the influence of addition on anti corrosion factor is not obvious.
The combined use of quarry rock dust and marble sludge powder exhibited excellent performance due to efficient micro filling ability and pozzolanic activity. Therefore, the results of this study provide a strong recommendation for the use of quarry rock dust and marble sludge powder as fine aggregate in concrete manufacturing.

Durability studies of concrete made by using artificial sand with dust and natural sand

ABSTRACT:
The huge quantity of concrete is consumed by construction industry all over the world. In India, the
conventional concrete is produced by using natural sand obtained from riverbeds as fine aggregate. Dwindling sand

resources poses the environmental problem and hence government restrictions on sand quarrying resulted in scarcity and

significant increase in its cost. This paper presents comparison of natural sand and artificial sand with dust, by checking

durability properties through the measurement of permeable voids, water absorption, acid attack and chloride

permeability test as well as compressive strength test.
Durability of concrete has always been important for obvious
reasons
. The promotional use of artificial sand will conserve the natural resources for the sustainable development of the
concrete in construction industry.

CONCLUSION

1. It was found that the mixes with the artificial sand with dust as fine aggregate gives consistently higher strength
than the mixes with natural sand. The sharp edges of the particles in artificial sand provide better bond with the
cement than the rounded part of the natural sand.
2. It was found that the weight loss of of artificial sand block is considerably same with respect to natural sand
blocks at 20, 40, 60 and 90 days, immersed in sulphuric acid solution during the experimental period and
maintain pH 4 across it.

3. Both concrete made using artificial sand and natural sand are moderate to chloride permeability.
4. In water absorption test we observed after 24 hours curing, the increase in weight of both natural sand and artificial sand blocks are less than 3% that means both concrete are low absorber hence concretes are good quality.

5.The test result obtained from well planed and carefully performed experimental program encourage the full
replacement of natural sand by artificial sand with dust considering the technical, environmental and commercial factor
