Er.Mustafa,

Do you mean this  post relates with respect to TALL BUILDING context or on General basis?

If on General Basis can you please repost it in the General Discussion since this is a Tall Building E-Conference topic.

Er.Saahil,

If your posting relates with respect to the piles  for Tall buildings then the proper persons are the Geotechnical Engineer Er.Jaydeep Wagh and one Er.J.Shukla Geo.tech engineer who is participating in the general discussion.

Hope they will respond.

As to my knowledge the piles for tall building goes with Raft for which you can refer books which I may post under BOOKS and REFERENCES and journal article already posted some in this conference.

Er.Mustafa,

Browse the link under Books and References where I have listed 7 reference articles for Piles Raft and 5 Books and one pile foundation pdf file.

Dear Mustafa,

I would be happy to try and help you with any specific queries that you may have pertaining to pile design or construction.

Cheers,
Sorabh

A few questions:

1) Analysis: We normally calculate the loads coming on pile manually in case of pile nos upto 5.How do we carry out the analysis of piles, is there any particular software that will be helpful especially when it comes to large no.of piles?

2)In our Office we generally provide socketing for pile in each and every project irrespective of soil type.Is it ok?

3)How to take into account lateral resistance of soil?

4)Is truss analogy the best way to design Pile cap?

Thanks in Advance
Mustafa

Dear Mustafa,

To be honest, I am not sure I have understood your queries, but shall try and respond as best as I can.

Are you referring to structural analysis of pile foundations, or geotechnical?

2)In our Office we generally provide socketing for pile in each and every project irrespective of soil type.Is it ok?

What do you mean by "socketing"?  Sockets into rock?
Any foundation design that does not take into account project-specific soil conditions would be uneconomical, if not incorrect.  Where are your projects located?

3)How to take into account lateral resistance of soil?

Please clarify.  Take into account where?

4)Is truss analogy the best way to design Pile cap?

Please clarify.

Thanks in Advance
Mustafa

Lets go one by one ..

1) Analysis: We normally calculate the loads coming on pile manually in case of pile nos upto 5.How do we carry out the analysis of piles, is there any particular software that will be helpful especially when it comes to large no.of piles?

Structural engineer may be carry rigid analysis in which the the static equilibrium is ensured i.e. P/A +- M/Z and based on the location of pile from the group/load point/c.g., load on piles are calculated and mostly correct for small group. However for large pile caps, geotechnically, the load (either axial or lateral) generally multiplied by group reduction factors (Prof. Poulos has many papers on it) and if you want use software then PIGLET, REPUTE or equivalent can be used.
2)In our Office we generally provide socketing for pile in each and every project irrespective of soil type.Is it ok?

The 'socketing' word generally used in connection with piles resting on rock or weathered rock formation hence i dont think mother earth will give you the flexibility to get rock at every foundation tip. If you are getting you are 'the lucky buddy'...

3)How to take into account lateral resistance of soil?

Either by p-y approach or strain wedge ..these are two methods by which you can reasonably calculate lateral resistance in almost any soil formation. However, as structural engineer (i hope your are) your task is to ensure safe behavior rather then to predict the ultimate lateral resistance (for which geotechnical engineer shall try hard) so majority of codes can be used.

4)Is truss analogy the best way to design Pile cap?

You might be referring strut and tie model (STM). I dont have much background on STM but it is emerging way to design and has proven to be more accurate (based on experiments conducted) however requires careful modeling technique and hence may take time in penetrating to the actual practice (accept US).

I hope it helps.
