|
|
Project: Design, Fabrication and Installation of Charkha Structure at Cross Maidan, Mumbai.
Structural Design: Sushil Singh
Supply, Fabrication and Installation: Sewri Engineering Company Pvt Ltd.
Architect: Nuru Karim
Client: Tata Steel
Brief:
Tata Steel.Tata Steel, in a move to reaffirm its commitment to its longstanding values, collaborated with the OVAL Trust to formally dedicate the ‘Charkha’ to the nation, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, October 2, 2011.
A 30ft-high steel structure, spiralling into the air, the ‘Charkha’ has been erected at the Cross Maidan Garden (Churchgate side). The garden is between Churchgate station and the business hub of Flora Fountain through which area thousands of commuters pass. This makes it accessible to vast numbers of people, as it is in a public recreation ground. The Charkha is an award-winning sculpture designed by architect Nuru Karim for the architectural and engineering design competition, ‘Notions of India’.
Tata Steel's Tubes SBU took up the challenge of fabricating the multiple facets of the sculpture consisting of steel hollow sections (Tata Structura) of varying dimensions. The steel facets have been configured to Nuru Karim's design of the Charkha to perfection by Sushil Singh of Sewri Engineering.

Thanks Dr. Subramanian,
It was a challenging and interesting assignment from Tata Steel and I had the privilege of designing and well as building it 1:1 scale off site in our workshop and erect at site.
Structure geometry was such that it was exactly opposite the rules of engineering. ( Higher stress areas -> Less Structural area and vice versa.)

Dear Er. Sushil_Singh,
Some recent examples of AMAZING STRUCTURES WE DO :
THE RITZ-CARLTON RESIDENCES WAIKIKI BEACH, PHASE 2 RECOGNIZED FOR STRUCTURAL EXCELLENCE

The Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikiki Beach, Phase 2 Recognized For Structural Excellence
May 10, 2019
Honolulu, HI – The Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikiki Beach, Phase 2 was recognized with a Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) Project Award for its exemplary use of post-tensioned concrete to overcome challenging aspects of the project, such as its rotation at the 27th floor to face Hawaii’s famous landmark Diamond Head. The project was designed by the Chicago and Honolulu offices of the structural engineering firm BASE and Guerin Glass Architects was the architect of record.
The Phase 2 tower was designed with a unique geometry requiring “crazy structural gymnastics,” according to Scott Glass of Guerin Glass Architects. As the tower reaches the mean height of approximately 240 feet, the floor plan twists east to face Diamond Head. In order to achieve this a large portion of the floor plan was cantilevered as much as 30 feet beyond the floor plan below, which was done by creating a grid of long span trusses supported at one end by a 3-level cantilevered truss. This structural system was designed to carry 11 occupied floors along with a landscaped penthouse roof deck. The building is topped off with incredible 2-story atriums in the penthouses where floating edges of slabs were supported using posts hung from the roof slab above.
“Structural engineering is one of the few professions where you have the opportunity to defy gravity and you can’t take that lightly,” states Steve Baldridge of BASE. “We went through a lot of effort to track load paths as the structure twists and turns to the meet the project’s functional and aesthetic requirements. The slabs at penthouse atriums appear to float in air and the upper floors hang in the sky but there is a lot of engineering that goes into making that a reality.”
ARCHITECTS MAKE OUR ( STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ) LIFE DIFFICULT AND ASK US TO DESIGN STRUCTURES WITH SUCH DIFFICULT GEOMETRY .
Regards .
