Hi,

Please see the attachment. The attachment shows a crack (hair line) developed at the mid section of the beam - form work has just been removed from the beam after 12 days.
What could be the reason for the crack?

I think it is not a flexural crack as if it was flexural it would not originate/extend to neutral axis.

Can it be neglected? What could be the reason?

Vishal

Dear Er. Vishal,

The Beam is 11m long.  The crack seems to be due to initial thermal-shrinkage of concrete for which some nominal reinforcement is to be provided at the side faces of the beam to control this crack.  There may not be any such reinforcement at the side faces of the beam.

With best wishes,

Dear Vishal,

Cracks in Concrete structure are common phenomena, But cracks that cause structural damages shall be assessed properly, However the data provided is too less for judgment.
1) Concrete is premature to assess the crack structurally, since 28 days strength is required
2) we need info like what is the width and extent of crack.
3) Is the structure loaded or  was propping inadequate while concreting,,like this there are many quires to to looked into.

Whether concreting of beam was discontinued at the middle of the beam and that whether any lap has been provided in reinforcement in the middle of beam on the bottom face.

Side face reinforcement is not required as per code. but even then the beam has cracked. The crack has gone  up to the bottom of slab beyond the neutral axis. The nature of crack does not appear to be structural.
