The Great Bridge Engineer Er. Chander R. Alimchandani Passes Away
18th Feb. 1935 -12th July 2015

A great engineer who built bridges between Independent India and the future of Indian engineering

Mr Chander R. Alimchandani, born on 18th February 1935, was graduated in 1957 from the University of Pune, in India. He participated in France in 1958 and 1959 in a theoretical and practical course on Prestressed Concrete, conducted under the chairmanship of Eugene Freyssinet. He stayed for two more years in France, working in the STUP society, later to be called Freyssinet International. Back in India he became the Technical Director of a medium sized construction company set up for specializing in prestressed concrete structures.


The 767 m long bridge across the river Yamuna at Kalpi has 85 m in-situ cantilever constructed spans pinned at their centers. In order not to detract from the graceful form of the spans which are 2.0 m deep at the center and 6.0 m deep at the supports, a light parapet was developed and precast to obtain a good finish and alignment.

STUP, a French acronym for “Societe Technique pour l’Utilisation de la Precontrainte” meaning “technical corporation for the utilization of prestressed concrete” was established in Paris in 1944 to spread knowledge of prestressed concrete and other inventions of Mr. Eugene Freyssinet (the renowned French engineer).

STUP Consultants Pvt. Ltd. (STUP) was created in 1963 at Mumbai and from the beginning, it started engineering Bridges and some other important Prestressed Concrete Structures. Er Alimchandani joined STUP Consultants Limited in Mumbai from the inception and soon became the Chief Engineer. He engineered several prestressed concrete bridges of lengths from 700 to 1000 m across major North Indian rivers with foundations which descended up to 50 m below the river bed. By 1980 Mr Alimchandani had built STUP Consultants as an independent company active all over India, Bangladesh, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq and Jordan, doing design and construction engineering for innovative and economic major structures of all types in steel and prestressed concrete. He decided to expand STUP Consultants activities to South East Asia and Africa, and in 2004 the staff strength was 800, working across 24 countries.

SCPL has rendered consultancy on Metro rail projects about two decades back on rehabilitation of distressed section for Kolkata Metro Rail and elevated Metro Rail for MTP Chennai. However STUP got involved in Metro Rail sector more extensively since stage II development of Delhi Metro (DMRC), when DMRC allowed Design Build Contracts.


This second Thane Creek Bridge, Mumbai is 1845 m long and has a superstructure consisting of two independent decks, each with a 3 lane carriage-way. To meet the hydraulic and navigation requirements the piers of the bridge are aligned with piers of existing road and Rail Bridge. This results in a span arrangement with a combination of 53.5 m and 107 m spans. A typical continuous unit is 321 m overall length with span arrangement of (53.5+2 x 107+53.5) m

His company now carries out all the work from feasibility studies to project management in the fields of Civil Engineering. Er Alimchandani was very active in national and international such as FIP – now fib - or IABSE, where he has held important positions.

Er. Chander R. Alimchandani, was  awarded the "2004 IABSE Award of Merit in Structural Engineeringn recognition of lifetime contribution to the development of Prestressed Concrete in 30 countries of Asia and Africa, as well as to the development of prestressed concrete structures and post tensioning technology in India and other parts of the world". Dr. Manabu Ito, President of IABSE, presented the Award to Mr Alimchandani during the Opening Session of the IABSE Symposium 'Metropolitan Habitats and Infrastructure', Shanghai, China, on September 22, 2004.  He was elected as a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering  (Architectural Engineering, Structural  Design) in 1987.

He was awarded the FIP Medal in 1986 in recognition of his work in Prestressed Concrete, a Gold Medal by the Japanese Construction Industry at the fib 2002 Congress at Osaka. He was Vice President of FIP for over a decade and a member of the Technical Committee of IABSE 1995-2003, Steering Committee of fib, Permanent Committee of IABSE, Chairman IMC of fib and Member Technical Council of fib. He was the President of the Institution of Engineers (India) during 1985 and was a member of several codal committees of BIS and IRC.
