Dear Mr. Sunil Gandhi, I try to answer the questions ratsed by you.
[A} How can it be tested as TMT in lab?
Ans:Sometimes it becomes necessary to determine if a particular rebar, or lot, has undergone proper heat treatment or is only a mild steel deformed bar. Because the two cannot be distinguished visually, the following lab test may be used for purposes of identification. A small piece (about 12mm long) can be cut and the transverse face lightly ground flat on progressively finer emery papers upto ‘0’ size. The sample can be macro etched with nital (5% nitric acid in alcohol) at ambient temperature for a few seconds which should then reveal a darker annular region corresponding to martensite/bainite microstructure and a lighter core region.
{B} It is seen that "TMT" marks are engraved on the bars at every 1metre length. Is there any agency who approves such branding in India like Tor Steel Research Foundation in India? Ans: The only authority in India who is competent to permit branding on ANY rebar is the Bureau of Indian Standards.Tor Steel Research Foundation is only an advisory body.
{C} There is almost a difference of Rs.2000/- to 3000/- per tonne in price of steel among various TMT bars manufactureres. How can one test as genuine TMT bars on visual appearance? Ans: There is no way to distinguish visually TMT vs Non TMT. The Macro etch test is the only way. Or you have to go for a trusted source.
