Dear Er.Dhruv

As far as I am aware, most of the bridges in India are with RCC girders. A few are with prestressed concrete and still fewer are with steel girders.

Have I misunderstood your query?

Sir,

Thanks for the reply but my query is about the railway over bridges, for which only steel girders are used. I want to know the reason behind that.

Dear Dhruv,

As per my opinion some of the reasons are as below,

1. Less time requires for erection as Railways Authority not permits more times due to Railway lines  are in continuous use.

2. All girders are pre-engineered & manufactured in factory so more quality can achieve.

3. Railway authority has his own Codes of standards other than IS & IRC.
Steel is strong enough against fatigue effect with compare to RCC.

4. Erected girders can use to support bridge R.C.C slab form work  so that
railway lines trains passing activities may not disturb.

Best Wishes,
Er. B. V. Harsoda

dear sefian,

steel girders are used in railway span of ROB to cater to span length requirement. Railway spans are mostly constructed as composite girder bridge with deck in RCC and girder in steel.

Thank you.

Appending to all the points as mentioned by B.V Harsoda sir, Steel in general will not fail as concrete due to the vibrations. Concrete will easily crack although we arrest the vibrations with ballast.

Also in case of repairs (may be during flood), steel can be repaired quickly and effectively.
