Dear all, 

As per table 18 of IS:456 2000,  

A sample load combination involving seismic force ( DBE) will be 

(a) For Stability check : DL + Seismic Load (DBE) 

(b) For strength Design : 1.5 DL + 1.5 * Seismic Load (DBE) 

If we Re-Write the same combinations for MCE earthquake  

(c) For Stability check : DL + Seismic Load (MCE) 

(d) For strength Design : 1.0 DL + 1.0 * Seismic Load (MCE) 

Considering the fact, MCE ~ 2 x DBE, this combination will lead to Higher size of Foundation comparing the stability load combination, whereas the effect on design will not be that significant. 

Do we need to evaluate number of piles required ( For Piled Foundation ) & Size of Foundation for shallow foundation based on above load combinations ( i.e. c & d ) 

Further to this,  

As per IS:1893 Part 4 (2005), clause 7.5.1 " Structures in Category 1 shall be designed for maximum considered earthquake (MCE) " 

This clause is not appearing in recent version of the code. 

What is the correct understanding of this phrase " Design for MCE earthquake & Check for DBE"
