Dear Sefians,                       Recently, many questions were put on the forum by young designers such as,how to design a cantilever stairs step or a semi-circular cantilever staircase or an abutment supporting a steel girder, etc.Instead of answering these small questions,it is better to have with us,books on structural design.Jain and Jaikrishna's books Volumes 1 and 2 or Reynold's Handbook and many such books have ready answers for these questions.Without books,we can not become good structural designers.A design engineer should know what subject or item is given in which book. Then the design becomes easy and the design engineer becomes successful.
There is a difference between a design engineer and a research engineer,A research engineer knows the theory and he can derive an engineering formula. While a design engineer knows how to use the given formula in a given situation,he may not be able to derive the formula

Nowadays, young engineers rely on google/computer programs and they feel no need of books. The google information or computer programs are based on books only. The mine of knowledge lies in books only.A good structural engineer should have with him, many good books on structural design.Without books,he can not become a good structural engineer.
with best wishes and regards,
uhvaryani

Dear Er. Varyani Sir,

What you have written about the present day young design Engineers is completely correct.  Some of the questions they ask in this forum are very immature, and wonder about their knowledge and understanding of structural behaviour.   If they are working in an office, why don't they inter-act with senior engineers there for answers before writing to SEFI discussion forum.  I hope they are not working as independent consultants yet!!!

With kind regards,

N. Prabhakar

I fully agree with both Er. Varyani and Er. Prabhakar. However, I would like to add a point or two. A practicing Structural Design Engineer should have easy access to good books, but while using a formula or a method, he or she must know the basic rules and assumptions behind.

Dear Er. Varyani Sir

Good to have your comment after a long time. Many young engineers do not want to read books and want to have instant solutions from experienced engineers.

Many of them, even if they are willing to read books, they want free books in pdf format, meaning they do not want to spend money on books. But they are willing to buy movie tickets at Rs. 500 for one show.  Whereas a book, which will serve them for many number of years,  will cost similar amount,  but is going to help them in their professional life.

This is the reason why book publishers are not willing to publish any book which is not a text book. In USA I find several people reading books even when travelling in metros. In India we see people looking at their phone, for which people are ready to spend over Rs. 50,000.

Another tendency is that they think that they can solve any problem if they have access to a software!

God alone can help this situation.

Warm regards
Subramanian
