Dear All

I am designing a steel roof truss in staad.
i have a confusion which member should be defined as a truss member in staad weather top chord, bottom chord or inclined member only or should be defined all member as a truss member & why?. i modeled purlin node to node at top chord.

Dear Er.Alok,
If the purlins are supported exactly in the nodes, you can model all the members viz., Top Chords (Rafter), Bottom Chords (Tie) and web members as Truss members. However, if some of the purlins are supported on the rafter members, then, those members will have to be designed as beams with axial load. For this, you model the truss using "Add Beams" command. Then assign "Truss" specification [ General -> Spec -> Beam -> Truss -> Add ] to all the members except those rafters, for analysis purpose.
