An 8mm diameter TMT bar Fe 500D was tested for tensile strength with following results ,yield strength was 600N/mm2 ,ultimate tensile strength was more than 700N/mm2 ,elongation of 25 % ,but E value of 53 GPa.As design considers the E value of steel as 200GPa, this certainly has an implication in design.But why steel code IS 1786 is silent on this parameter. Or is this specimen a defective one as it is giving both high strength and high elongation.Kindly advice.

Dear SEFIAN

Yes, the abnormally low E value will have a significant effect resulting in larger defelction and larger crack widths

It is better to recheck the value using a different sample and, may be in a different laboratory also

If the low value is repeated, I think, you should take up this matter with the manufacturers and insist upon replacement of the entire lot

Test a few more samples from the same batch to confirmregards

The maximum strain in steel should be greater than or equal to 0.002+((0.87*fy)/(Es)).Young's modulus of steel is inversely proportional to the strain value. If the E value decreases the strain value of the steel will increase.It might beneficial for us our structure with stand greater loads.

8mm steel can give elevated results try with 16mm and view the results
