While designing multi-storeyed RC Buildings in Zone V, we often find that larger sections of concrete and larger percentage of rebars are required at lower storeys while for upper storeyes, (e.g. from sixth to upper storeys in case of nine storeyed building), minimum percentage of rebar (0.8%) is found to be sufficient if we keep the same size of concrete section for columns. My query is: Can we reduce the concrete section as well in such cases to be economical in terms of concrete section provided stiffness difference in different storeys is within 70% as provided by IS 1893 Part 1?
I observed that most of the columns in seventh to ninth storeys have only 0.8% rebars while keeping the same section size from lower storeys.
