Dear Colleagues:

Past earthquakes in India and other developing countries have caused major human and economic losses. This is mostly due to weak unreinforced masonry buildings and non-engineered reinforced concrete (RC) buildings which are are vulnerable to earthquake effects when adequate design expertise and construction quality assurance are not available. In such a scenario, confined masonry (CM) has emerged as an alternative construction technology in many earthquake-prone countries. For the first time in India, 36 G+2 and G+3 CM buildings have been recently constructed and new buildings are currently under construction at the IITGN Campus at Palaj, Gandhinagar.

IITGN invites you to attend a seminar (on April 10, 2019 , Wednesday ) at which relevant topics related to the CM technology will be discussed and the ongoing construction project will be showcased. The topics will include seismic analysis and design approaches for CM buildings, and research studies performed in India and internationally. The speakers are internationally renowned CM experts: Prof. Durgesh Rai, IIT Kanpur; Prof. Juan Jose Perez Gavilan, UNAM, Mexico and chair of the Mexican masonry code committee; and Dr. Svetlana Brzev, Visiting Professor at IITGN and Adjunct Professor, University of British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Shailesh Agrawal, Executive Director, Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council, New Delhi, is the Chief Guest for the event.

This full-day event is going to take place on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 from 9:30 AM until 5:00 PM at IITGN Campus, Palaj, Gujarat. The registration is free of charge. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

There is no charge for the same.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Sudhir K. Jain
