Is the 3-dimensional hook shown in 13920:2016  constructable?

Cross ties for columns are shown in Fig.10 of IS 13920:2016 (see the detail in Fig. 10(b) of the code). They basically are provided to reduce the buckling of main longitudinal bars and also to increase the confinement of concrete inside the core of column reinforcement cage. This time IS 13920 does not support overlapping hoops.

The above mentioned figure in the code indicates that the cross-tie  should also reduce the unsupported length of main ties, as they are shown to go not just around the vertical bars but also wrap around the main link. To achieve this the hook can't be in horizontal plane. This requirement of 3-dimensional hook in IS 13920 is unique.  Has anyone seen such a 3-D hook in other codes?

Most site engineers and bar benders curse this detail.  In addition, 3D hook also reduces clear cover. There was a lengthy discussion in a Whatsapp group about this. Hence I want to bring it to the notice of this larger group to solicit more discussion and opinion. Should detail in Fig. 10(b) of the code be withdrawn as it is difficult to implement in the field?

Best wishes
NS

Dear Prof. Subramanian Sir,

Sorry for the late response. I do agree with you that the detail as shown in Fig. 10 (c) of the Code is impractical. It is tempting to try to restrain the link as well as the vertical bar in the column, but it should be clear that adequate confinement will be achieved without 3D bar bends if only the vertical bar is restrained. This matter ought to be raised with the corresponding code committee.

Regards,

A S Oundhakar
