Dear All,
I have been assigned to assess the existing Size Stone Masonry foundation for a 40 year old structure from one of my client and check the feasibility of adding another floor.

Details are as below:
Depth of foundation below GL.      - 3'-6"
PCC Depth                         - 0'-6"
1st Course                         - 2'-6" wide 1'-6" deep
2nd Course                    - 2'-0" wide 1'-6" deep
3rd Course (Above GL)          - 1'-6" wide 1'-6" deep

Load Details:
Ground floor Brick wall          - 9" wide 3m high clear
Ground floor roof               - 6" thick
First floor Brick wall               - 9" wide 3m high clear
first floor roof                    - 6" thick

No much wind load is present.
Seismic Zone - Bengaluru

I referred IS 1905 - 1987 and SP20. However, could not conclude on the details presented there. Request all sefians to help in this regard.

Further, it would be helpful if someone can share any rule of thumb to check the no. of courses of footing, width of footing per storey etc. it would be really helpful.

Best Regards,
Prashanth P N

First and foremost, you have assess the maximum pressure on the soil from your footing, taking into consideration the eccentricity of the loading on it by the wall in the superstructure also. Check this against the SBC of the soil. Hence, you have first to assess the DL & LL coming on footing from the 2 storey building, per metre run of the footing. Your footing configuration looks fine.
