Hi All,

I have calculated the column loads for g+2 building in staad.pro software using plate elements and also calculated the loads manually by influence area method to cross verify both software and manual calculation.

I have added all the column loads from staad.pro software which is 2% higher than the manual calculation.

So,is this difference is ok or we need to get the exact values??

Kindly provide your valuable suggestions.

Dear Sathya,

Influence area method is more of an approximation, while the plate-beam-column modeling is an exact approach. Hence, there is bound to be some differences here and there in the column load values obtained by these 2 methods. It will be within acceptable limits.

We cannot define the value of such limits. All such approximations & uncertainties, which are within tolerance, will be taken care of by the factors of safety in the design.

Dear Er.Sathya ,
I went through ur mail sent to me and u informed there is a difference of 5% . Since STAAD calculate with the input of density and E value for the self weight and the difference from manual and if u use plate element the calculation may be FEM rather than stiffness method.
Anyway the difference upto 10% can be acceptable. Since the dimension and the area of steel provided will be usually more than the required based on the number and size of the bar.
Hope it is clear.
The above is based on my own experience.

You can also use other software like Etabs,Nisa Design Studio or Tekla structural designer for cross verification.I am following the above technique for all my projects.

Welcome, Rangarajan sir, after a long absence from the group. I think, FEM is an advancement of Stiffness method.

Yes! FEM is an advance tool and stiffness is another tool that r used in almost many software.
If u use plate beam element by using mesh generation the STAADPRO follows the FEM method.
