Dear All,

How do we provide the detailing of the column if we add hinges in the column?
I have attached the image for your reference.
Thanks & Regards,
Ramu.

Er Ramu ji,,

Such a structural composition in portal frame seems hypothetical,  may be only academic and not practical.

Provision of Hinges :-

If steel column :- eg I section column
The hinge can be provided by making cut in each flange of  both portal columns and only web is continued. Still some minor moment will exist ( though Negligible) .

If Rcc columns :-
The detailing can be seen in any text book / literature. The column section is reduced at hinge to extent that it will be ok to pass vertical load/ horizontal force. The vertical bars of opposite faces are crossed at hinge and moment carrying capacity is almost zeroed.

Hinge connection is s provided st support points only ,, especially in steel columns . Portal action create double the moments at beam column junction reducing to zero moment at base (hinge pt)  versus fixed support connection.
