Dear All,

There was a wonderful presentation on the collapse of viaduct over the Polcevera river in Genoa, Italy, by my friend Er Alok, yesterday(15th Oct.2020). If anyone has missed it you can view it at
https://youtu.be/KBcU5h-0ftQ

Don't miss this, as you will not only learn about the failure and details of this unique bridge designed by one of the greatest Italian bridge engineers Er Riccardo Morandi (who designed it using slide rule in early 1960s), but also about Er Riccardo Morandi himself and the new bridge that was built in its place in a record period of 2 years!

Warm regards
Subramanian

THE STORY OF MORANDI BRIDGE COLLAPSE, ITALY
by Er. Alok Bhowmick, FNAE, Int. PE (India)
President, Indian Association of Structural Engineers

This presentation aims to reminisce the complete story of the collapse of Polcevera Viaduct (also known as Morandi Bridge), Italy. Designed by Prof. Ricardo Morandi and Constructed in the period 1963-1967, this bridge was one of the longest concrete bridges in the world at the time of opening and was considered an advanced form of construction for its time. However since construction, the bridge had serviceability issues and there were many interventions during the 50 years of its survival. The bridge eventually collapsed in August 2018, killing 43 people.

This failure has created ripples in the bridge engineering fraternity around the globe, prompting serious debate regarding the technical and administrative aspects of maintaining bridge assets. This is perhaps the only cable stayed bridge of modern era, which collapsed during its service life. Potential reasons for the collapse are discussed briefly in this presentation. There are many engineering and administrative lessons that is learnt from this collapse story, including from the post-collapse interventions, forensic investigations, art of demolition of the bridge and other steps taken by the authorities. A new bridge, replacing the old bridge has been constructed at the location, in a record time span of 15 months. The presentation is based entirely on publicly available material.
