Hi All,
As we all know that in earlier days the structural design work was done by using manual design and drafting method and nowadays we are depending on softwares like Autocad,Staad.pro & Etabs etc.
Now automation is happening in many other fields due to artificial intelligence and that leads to reduction of manpower.
Here my question is to know that what are all the possibilities of automation in structural engineering in future and what is the impact?
Will that reduce the scope of structural engineers in future?
Which field of structural engineering will have the major impact due to automation?
Thanks,
Sathya. |

I have been watching this discussion curiously to know how extent it
will go. This post of Sathyaa should be the one that brought out the
reality. Yes it is the aftermath of development of digital
computation, and subsequent development of artificial intelligence and
automation.
In spite of these developments, there are areas that cannot be
replaced by humans in structural design, especially, in finding the
apt position of supports, defining support conditions, envisaging
probability of imposed loads/ defining characteristic load, defining
characteristic strength of materials etc..producing easily buildable
structural configuration/detailing.... These will reveal the expertise
of next generation a structural engineer. Such persons will survive.

Dear Sefi Friends ,
From : ASCE Smart Brief , Nov. 20th 2020 :
Researchers are developing robot swarms that turn into buildings, vehicles, and more
AI-driven structures would build themselves
A US Army think tank and MIT say that self-assembling structures including bridges are now possible with the use of robotic metamaterials. The envisioned system would deploy itself in the form of robot swarms using shapes generated by artificial intelligence at the cellular level to create the desired structures.

Good Luck to all Structural Engineers with this new tech. AI .
