Dear Members,

I am currently dealing with a footing design for a residential project. My question is that if we can take into account the live load reduction factor for designs the footings(size & reinforcement both).

Dear Sir,
In general, Live Load Reduction Factor as per IS 875 Part 2 Clause 3.2 can be applied to foundation also.  However, it is probably not applicable in your case because of clause 3.2.1.1 which restricts minimum LL for which this is applicable as 5 kN/sqm (compared to usual LL in residential projects of 2 or 3 kN/sqm. Further, reduction as per 3.2.2 is only applicable to the floor beams.

Hope that helps
Yours sincerely
S Arunkumar

Dear Arun ji,
Thank you for your reply and for providing the codal reference.
I am curious to understand the logic for not reducing the live load for foundation design if load is lesser than 5kN/m2.
Since we are allowed to reduce it for column design then why not for foundation?
