OTTO MOHR (1835 - 1918)
Born in Holstein on the coast of North Sea. Graduated from the Hannover Polytechnic al Institute and started working as STRUCTURAL ENGINEER on construction of rail roads. He designed some of the first steel Trusses  in Germany.
Between 1868 and 1873 Mohr taught Engineering Mechanics at Stuttgart. He was interested in devising Graphical Methods for solving problems in the theory of structures. In 1873 Mohr moved to Dresden and continued teaching there till his retirement at age of 65 yrs.
Mohr's best work lies in Theory of Structures. He also contributed to strength of Materials.
Important work is graphical representation of stress point. He used his representation of stresses by circles to devise a strength theory which can be adopted to various stress conditions and with better agreement with experiments

KARL TERZAGHI (1883 - 1963)

Karl TERZAGHI is father of SOIL MRCHANICS. Born in Prague , Austria on 2nd October.
Studied Mechanical engineering and graduated in 1904 and completed essential year in Army , followed by study in Geology on Civil Engg projects. Received Doctor of Technical Sc degree in 1912 for his work on reinforced Concrete.
Taught and worked for ten yrs in Istanbul , and in 1923 published fundamental differential equation for consolidation processes , 1924 paper on consolidation of clays  and in 1925 a famous book on SOIL MECHANICS.
The Science of Soil Mechanics emerged thereafter , and TERZAGHI devoted his rest of life in its research, teaching and practice.
Ultimately  settled in states and worked for MIT  and HARVARD.

Born in FREISING near Munich. Engineering education from Munich Polytechnic al Institute . 1899 he wrote doctoral theis on LATERAL BUCKLING OF NARROW RECTANGULAR XSEC BENT IN PLANE OF MAX FLEXURAL RIGIDITY.
After brief sojourn in Industry , PRANDTL returned to academic life. He worked at the University of Göttingen and contributed to many fields. His renowned pupils include TIMOSHENKO , VON KARMAN , W PRAGER,
PRANDTL solved two dimensional problem of semi infinite body under uniform pressure over a strip of given width.
PRANDTL worked on strength of Materials , but his major contribution is in field of AERODYNAMICS.

CHARLES AUGUSTIN   COULOMB (1736 - 1806 )

A noted physicist was born at Angloleme in France . He is known for his research  on FRICTION , ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM and EARTH PRESSURE AGAINST RETAINING WALLS.

He began his career as Army engineer in the French Govt. But suffered in health due to working on tropics, later devoted to scientific persuits. His lucid and simple theory of Earth Pressure published in 1773 , is still today basis for design of retaining walls.

WILLIAM JOHN MACQUORN. RANKINE (1820 - 1872 )

Born in Edinburgh , the Scottish scientist had his early apprenticeship in engineering , but at age of 28 complete transformation occurred  in him and turned to theoretical physics and more academic persuits.
He was among first to apply streamlines to ship designs. His contributions to theory of elasticity , of waves and of thermodynamics are well known. In heat engines , Rankine's cycle is named after him.
This versatile scientist contributed paper on STABILITY OF LOOSE EARTH  in 1857. Rankine's theory propounded in his paper with awareness of underlying assumptions ,is still useful tool for practising engineers.

He died early at age of 52.

ARTHUR CASAGRANDE (1902 - 1981)

Born in Yugoslavia , studied Civil Engg until 1924 , after which worked as assistant in Hydraulics. In 1926 , he came to U.S and met Karl TERZAGHI at M.I.T. His long career began in soil mechanics and intimate friendship with TERZAGHI.
He worked for MIT , moved to Harvard in 1932 and occupied newly created chair of soil mechanics and foundation engineering.
He was responsible for many advances in soil mechanics , particularly in developing procedure and apparatus for testing if soil and techniques for classifying and identifying the soil materials.

JOSEPH  VALETIN  BOUSSINESQ ( 1842 - 1929  )

Born in small town of Saint- Andre - de - Sangini in South France, and studied Languages & Mathematics after his early education. He became Mathematics teacher. Obtained his Doctorate at University  of Paris in 1867 , and about same time wrote his memoir on THEORY OF ELASTICITY. In 1873 he became professor at University of Lille and in 1886 elected to the membership of Academy of Sciences and to the chair of Mathematics at University of Paris.

He was responsible for advances in  HYDRODYNAMICS, OPTICS , THERMODYNAMICS and THEORY OF ELASTICITY.

From practical value , most important of his solutions are those concerning  the stresses and deformations produced in semi- infinite body known as forces applied at boundary planes.

In SOIL MECHANICS , HIS EQUATIONS OF STRESS DISTRIBUTION ARE WIDELY USED.

In 1932 he joined staff of civil engineering department at M.I.T. where he remained till his death.

Professor Taylor was active in both Boston Society of Civil engineers and American Society of Civil engineers. From 1948 to 1953 he was International Secretary for International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation engineering.
His major contribution to the fundamental s of Soil Mechanics especially on topics of CONSOLIDATION , SHEAR STRENGTH OF COHESIVE SOILS , AND THE STABILITY OF EARTH SLOPES.

His paper on STABILITY of Earth slopes was awarded highest award from Boston Society of Civil engineers.
His text book FUNDAMENTALS OF SOIL MECHANICS   has been widely used for many years.

He presented Khosla 's Flow Net Theory on seepage flow of water beneath hydraulic Structures . The Earlier Bligh's Creep Theory stating water seepage follows contour of bottom profile of hydraulic Structures. Khosla's theory stating the seepage flow thru streamlines which form a flow net is improved research on the subject.
AN Khosla was Vice Chancellor of Roorkee University (1954 - 1959) . He was associated with Trimmu Barrage , Bhakra Dam, Hirakud Dam  and many other Irrigation and water power structures.
He was appointed first Chairman of newly formed  Central Waterways , Irrigation & Navigation Commision in 1945.
He was nominated  as member of Rajya Sabha in 1958 , but resigned in 1959 for important assignment  of  Vice chairman of Planning Commision .

He received Govt of India prestigious awards of PADMA BHUSHAN (1954)  & PDMA VIBHUSHAN (1977).

He also served as Governor of Odisha from 1962 to 1966 and again from 1966 to 1968.
