HENRY PHILIBERT GASPARD DARCY ( 1803 - 1858 )
Born in Dijon France , Henry Darcy was a renowned French engineer having several important contributions to HYDRAULICS INCLUDING FAMOUS. DARCY LAW FOR FLOW THROUGH POROUS MEDIA.
His father died when he was 14 yrs of age , and further brought up and cared by his mother who borrowed money to send him to ECOLE Polytechnique in Paris (1821) from where , Darcy moved to SCHOOL OF BRIDGES AND ROADS .
First employed as Corps of Bridges and Roads. Darcy , having high aptitude and keen interest in Hydraulics , was instrumental in providing clean water to Dijon City through pressurized water distribution system due to failure of drilling wells in city. Darcy planned water supply thru aqueduct 12.7 km long from watercourse to city reservoir using sand filters.
His Famous Darcy Law is in form of modifications of Prony Equation for Head Loss , which was further improved by Julius Weisbach and is known as DARCY - WEISBACH EQUATION FOR HEAD LOSS.
In 1848 , Darcy was CE and further raised to the level of Chief Director of Water Works and Pavements at Paris Office. In 1855 he resigned due to poor health but was requested to carry his research , carry experiments in the sand columns to conclude in form of Darcy Law.
Unit of measurements of permeability is named after Darcy.
He met early demise due to pneumonia while during trip to Paris in 1858 and rested there . |

JULIAS LUDWIG WEISBACH ( 1806 - 1871 )
Born in Mittelschimiedeberg , Germany Julias was German Mathematician who wrote on HYDRAULICS , MECHANICS , SURVEYING , OPTICS , CRYSTALLOGRAPHY , MOUNTAIN MACHINERY , DESCRIPTIVE GEOMETRY & MATHEMATICS. Such were his wide areas of studies .
Weisbach father was a FOREMAM IN MIME and with Nine children , family was not well off. Studied at schools near his hometown and completed courses in 1822.
For further studies finances were problem . However on Moh's ( German Mineralogist ) advice his father sent him to Göttingen and further to University of Vienna where Weisbach studied Mathematics , Physics and Mechanics.
1830 , Weisbach travelled on foot for six months covering Hungary , Tyrol , Bavaria and Bohemia .
1831 , Weisbach returned to Freiberg and taught mathematics at Bergackadmie in Freiberg and was promoted as Professor of Mathematics , Mine Machinery and Surveying.
His interest in Hydraulics started in year 1939 when he visited Paris for Industrial Exposition 1939. He refined Darcy 's Head Loss equation which is named after the duo as Darcy -Weisbach Equation .
Weisbach also contributed towards Surveying by introducing THEODOLITE in place of PLANE TABLE AND PROTRACTOR in mines and Mountain Surveying.
He contributed 14 Books and 59 papers on wide range of subjects.
He died in Freiberg Germany in the year 1871 . |

PIERRE - SIMON LAPLACE ( 1749 - 1827 )
Born in Normandy France , Simon Laplace was a prominent Mathematician , Physicist & Astronomer making crucial contribution s in arena of Celestial Mechanics of heavenly bodies in Universe , Analytic Theory of PROBABILITY and Statics , Differential Equations , Standardisation of European Weights & Measures , Integral Calculus , Theory of Black Hole .His works influenced many Mathematicians . He is regarded as French Newton.
His father wanted him to be ordained in Roman Catholic Church and sent him to Ceon University to study Theosophy . But young Laplace got interested in Mathematics simultaneously studying Theosophy , and moved to Paris at age of 19 to work as Professor of Maths and in short span gave 13 Sc Papers on Physics Astronomy , & Integral Calculus.
Laplace said that Nature of Universe is DETERMINISTIC.
From 1769 - 77 He was at ECOLE Militaire , and was Examiner of NAPOLEAN . He was rewarded later in 1806 as Count of Empire and in 1817 as Marquis .
1778 saw him as Member of Paris Academic des Sciences and in 1785 raised to Senior position there.
1812 , Laplace 's work on PROBABILITY was acknowledged.
He died in Paris in 1827 |

ROBERT MAILLART ( 1872 - 1940 )
Born in Bern Switzerland MAILLART was a Swiss CIVIL & STRUCTURAL ENGINEER who revolutionised the use of rcc for three Hinged Arch Bridge in design of Salginatobel Bridge and Deck - stiffned Arch Bridge in design of Schandbach Bridge . He also ventured first to design Beamless Floor Slabs , Flared Columns at top and bottom , Mushroom ceiling for Industrial Buildings.
Graduated from Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ETC 1894.
MAILLART never excelled in academic theories , but his visualisation of structure and analysing them with assumptions simplified the highly mathematical oriented structural analysis. He was always annoyed with overuse of Mathematics for structure.
He was mentored by Wilhelm Ritter.
From 1898 , he worked in private firms at Zurich , but in 1902 , started his own firm . In 1912 during Industrial Revolution in Russia , MAILLART moved to St Petersburg and gave class designs for warehouses and factories. Unaware of World War , got stuck in Russia for some time and moved back to Switzerland ,penniless with heavy debts. However he re- established himself working at Geneva Engg Office.
Being Innovative Structural Analyser & designer with extra ordinary aesthetic sense , MAILLART Bridges are class apart and in 1991 his Salginatobel Bridge (constructed in 1929 - 30) was accredited with HISTORIC CIVIL ENGG LANDMARK by ASCE.
His three principles were , simplified analysis using visualisation and assumptions , ; Construction process based design ; Testing on Full Scale after construction .
Robert MAILLART had intuition and genius to exploit aesthetics in Concrete.
He died in 1940 , Switzerland. |
